General Production

This section focuses on the practical, behind-the-scenes skills that keep everything running smoothly—regardless of what position you serve in. Whether you’re on audio, video, lighting, or graphics, understanding the basics of production is essential for clear communication and efficient teamwork. You’ll learn how to properly wrap and manage cables, identify different types of connectors (like XLR, TRS, HDMI, and SDI), follow standard stage directions, and move around the platform without causing distractions. These are the small but crucial habits that help create a professional, distraction-free environment where the focus stays on worship—not the tech.

Cables

Cables are the unseen backbone of every production setup. Whether you're sending audio to a speaker, video to a screen, or power to a light, it all relies on the right cable doing its job reliably. In this section, you'll learn to identify common cables used in live production—like XLR and TRS for audio, HDMI and SDI for video, and DMX for lighting control. You'll also come across things like IEC and PowerCON for power, Cat5/6 for networked systems, and quarter-inch or speakON connectors for instruments and speakers. Understanding what each cable does—and how they connect into your system—is essential to problem-solving and confident setup.

Just as important as knowing your cables is handling them correctly. Properly wrapping and storing cables prevents tangling, damage, and tripping hazards, and shows respect for the tools and team. A well-wrapped cable saves time, extends the life of your gear, and keeps the whole tech environment clean and efficient. It may seem simple, but getting this right lays the foundation for excellent production.

Power

Power is one of the most essential foundations of any production setup. From audio consoles and projectors to lighting and video switchers, everything relies on stable and sufficient power. This section helps you understand how to select the right type of cable and connector for each piece of gear, manage extension cords safely, and avoid overloading circuits. You'll also learn about power distribution, surge protection, and identifying which outlets or circuits should be used for high-demand equipment like amplifiers, lighting controllers, or switchers.

In most church environments, power needs can be met with standard 15–20 amp circuits—but larger events or special setups may involve advanced systems using three-phase power with heavy feeder cables. While you may not use it every week, it's helpful to understand the basics so you can work confidently alongside electricians or rental vendors when the time comes. Whether you're plugging in a projector or helping set up a full outdoor service, knowing how to plan and protect your power keeps everything running safely and smoothly.
